We developed a capacity-strengthening plan to improve health workforce capacity at the system, facility, and individual levels.

COVID-19: Mitigating Impact on Neonatal Mortality through Remote Training

Client: American Academy of Pediatrics/Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

IHC facilitated the delivery of a low dose high frequency skilled-based training of healthcare workers.  The training was deployed through the NeoNatalie Live (NNL) via helping babies breathe (HBB) and the HMBS platforms. The healthcare workers were mentored for over 6 months. The training was implemented in 4 sites – 1 site each in Borno and Gombe, and 2 sites in Yobe states. The Helping Babies Breathe (HBB) is an evidence-based educational program to build the capacities of healthcare workers to develop basic neonatal resuscitation skills to reduce newborn mortality and stillbirth rates.

A significant increase in health workers’ knowledge and practice of basic neonatal resuscitation skills and an increase in the number of deliveries recorded across all 4 sites. The average neonatal mortality rate and early neonatal mortality rate dropped from baseline. In addition, the neonatal mortality rate due to birth asphyxia and admissions to the neonatal care unit for asphyxia dropped in the training sites.
